WSCC Statement on the Re-Opening of Churches

On May 22, 2020, Washington’s Catholic bishops affirmed that the suspension of public Masses was motivated by respect for human life, protection of the vulnerable, and concern for the common good rather than fear or partisanship. While expressing a strong desire to welcome Catholics back to public worship, the bishops said they would wait until it could be done safely and reverently, noting that they were working through the WSCC with the Governor’s office on reopening plans informed by guidance from the USCCB, the Thomistic Institute, and public health experts. At the same time, parishes were preparing for reopening, although no date or attendance limits had yet been determined.
