Seeking the Common Good

In Seeking the Common Good, Washington state’s Catholic bishops frame state budgeting and tax policy as moral issues that should be evaluated through Catholic Social Teaching and their impact on the poor and vulnerable. They call for a fairer, more progressive tax system that distributes responsibilities equitably, recognizes the complementary roles of individuals, churches, charities, and government, and raises sufficient revenue to support essential services such as housing, health care, mental health treatment, addiction services, and care for children and seniors. The bishops emphasize that economic policy should promote human dignity, protect those most at risk, support jobs and living wages, and ultimately serve the common good by ensuring that all Washington residents can share more fully in the state’s prosperity.

Human justice can be realized and protected only in community. Indeed, we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers — a truth that reminds us that the good of one is connected to the good of all.
