La Crisis Migratoria

Por muchos años, ha habido un creciente consenso a nivel nacional de que el sistema de inmigración de los Estados Unidos tiene serios desperfectos y que necesita una reforma completa e inmediata. Sin embargo, el aplazamiento continuo en la aprobación de una amplia reforma de inmigración ha creado un vacío que es llenado por iniciativas paliativas y remiendo de las leyes estatales. Los intentos de deportación masiva, así como los planes de reforzar las fronteras físicas no son ni efectivos ni sostenibles para enfrentar esta crisis humanitaria internacional. La decepcionante realidad continúa complicando los intentos de cumplimiento de la ley, siembra discordia en nuestras comunidades y daña a personas vulnerables.
Los Estados Unidos tiene tanto el derecho, como la obligación de proteger sus fronteras y a sus ciudadanos. Al mismo tiempo, nuestro país tiene la responsabilidad de acudir en ayuda de personas que están huyendo del peligro y que vienen aquí a construir una mejor vida para sus familias.
Las condiciones cada vez peores que alimentan la crisis de refugiados en Latinoamérica, combinadas con las políticas nacionales que no respetan la dignidad de los seres humanos, aumentan el riesgo de causar aún más sufrimiento para aquellos que huyen del peligro, y amenazan contra la tranquilidad nacional prometida a los americanos.
Como católicos, creemos que cada persona, sin importar su situación legal, es una hermana o un hermano en Jesucristo. Estamos llamados a practicar la caridad cristiana y a proteger y a defender la dignidad de todo ser humano, especialmente la de los pobres y de los más vulnerables según el derecho moral natural. Debemos continuar luchando por una reforma migratoria amplia que honre la dignidad de aquellos que buscan una vida mejor en los Estados Unidos, al mismo tiempo que aborde la legítima necesidad de fronteras seguras y protegidas.

For many years there has been a growing national consensus that the U.S. immigration system is severely flawed and in need of a comprehensive overhaul. However, the continued stalemate on enacting comprehensive immigration reform has created a void filled by stopgap initiatives and a patchwork of state laws. Current mass-deportation efforts, as well as plans to reinforce our physical borders, are neither effective nor sustainable means of addressing this international humanitarian crisis. This disappointing reality continues to complicate efforts of law enforcement, sow discord in our communities, and harm vulnerable people.
The United States has both a right and a duty to protect our borders and our citizens. At the same time, our country has a responsibility to come to the aid of people who are fleeing danger and come here to build a better life for their families.
Worsening conditions that fuel the Latin American refugee crisis, combined with domestic policies that disrespect the dignity of human beings, risk causing even greater suffering for those fleeing peril and threaten the domestic tranquility promised to Americans.
As Catholics, we believe that each person, regardless of legal status, is a sister or brother in Jesus Christ. We are called to practice Christian charity and to protect and defend the dignity of every human person, especially the poor and most vulnerable based on the moral natural law. We must continue to strive for comprehensive immigration reform that honors the dignity of those seeking a better life in the United States, while also addressing the legitimate need for safe and secure borders.
